Understanding Psilocybin Retreats

Psilocybin retreats create a safe, monitored space to experience the benefits of psilocybin, a natural psychedelic fungi. When you ingest it, it mirrors serotonin, the brain chemical that influences mood and cognition. In other words, it makes you feel more positive. When followed with integration support, this mood change isn’t fleeting. Changes in perception, thought, and mood can last far after your retreat experience.

Religious and spiritual groups, including Indigenous tribes, have used psilocybin for centuries. They use it for spiritual awakening, healing, or as communion. These rituals create greater self-awareness, understanding, emotional healing, and group unity. At Sacred Pillars, we use this sacrament to empower you to connect with your divine self and humanity.

Psilocybin also is gaining attention for its potential therapeutic benefits. Research studies have found it’s effective in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). More research is ongoing to understand these potential benefits better.

The Sacred Pillars Church Approach to Psilocybin Retreats

Your psilocybin retreat with Sacred Pillars happens in three phases: preparation, the retreat experience, and integration. Each phase is critical to your transformational journey.

The Preparation Phase (5 weeks)

Your transformational journey starts well before taking the sacred sacrament of psilocybin. You have to prepare for the experience.

Psilocybin doesn’t show you anything that isn’t already within you, so you must learn to “sit” with yourself — to observe, feel, or experience things within you that may be challenging to face or accept.

The better you prepare for your plant medicine journey, the safer and more profound your experience will be. So, during this phase, our coaches will help you:

  • Understand obstacles or impediments to achieving your goals.
  • Begin to break down barriers and reshape disempowering thinking.
  • Connect with your true nature using the breath and body work.
  • Identify your unique way of processing and handling life’s challenges.
  • Learn to process your life in a way that is aligned with psilocybin use — by balancing your mind, body, mental, and spiritual centers.

During this phase, we work to prepare you for the journey, so you know what to expect during the ceremony. We want you to understand how to handle potentially uncomfortable experiences and work with psilocybin for profound results during your entheogen retreat. It’s also essential for you to understand how we can assist you in making your experience beneficial.

This preparation happens in four virtual sessions that include videos, daily exercises, one-on-one support, and relationship building.

The Retreat (3 days)

The three-day Sacred Pillars Psilocybin retreat is where all your preparation comes into play. During the retreat, you will convene with a small group of no more than 12 participants and your coaches at a comfortable, safe, private location in the Central United States.

During the retreat, you will participate in a breathwork ceremony, a psilocybin sacrament ceremony, and other activities, including meditation and sharing circles. You also will drink ceremonial-grade Cacao plant for heart opening and expansiveness.

While at the retreat, you will have indoor communal sleeping accommodations, and most meals are provided.

During the entire retreat, your coaches will be present for personalized reassurance, assistance, and immediate integrative support.

The Integration Phase (5 weeks)

You may experience life-changing results from the retreat and use of plant medicine, but you also will need to continue your unifying journey after that experience. During this phase, you’ll integrate what you’ve learned at your entheogen retreat into your daily life.

Through integration follow-up sessions and professional coaching, we help you navigate and ease your changes into your existing environment, community, family, relationships, and work.

The integration phase includes four virtual group sessions and one private one-on-one session. During the sessions, you’ll receive advice for helping make your retreat experience profound and lasting. You’ll also continue connecting with your coaches and retreat cohort after the psilocybin retreat has concluded.

Benefits and Transformative Potential

The benefits of entheogen or psilocybin retreats are different for everyone. What you want to receive from the retreat helps set your intentions and guide your outcomes. Some common outcomes of entheogen retreats include:

  • Spiritual Experiences. A greater sense of connection with the universe and a deeper understanding of your spirituality.
  • Emotional Healing. Help addressing and processing past traumas or mental health concerns that are negatively impacting your life.
  • Greater Self-Awareness. Increased insight into your behaviors, thoughts, and emotional responses to various life challenges or experiences.
  • Community. A sense of community and shared experience with your coaches and others in your retreat cohort.
  • Personal Growth. Clarity on your purpose in life or decision-making, along with the ability to release limiting beliefs holding you back.

The Sacred Sacraments

Sacred Sacrament of Psilocybin

The therapeutic potential of psilocybin is emerging into mainstream conversations and clinical studies.   As western society slowly releases social stigma and false beliefs, we reawaken our consciousnesses to its profound healing nature.  Indigenous tribes all over the world have used it for spiritual and healing purposes for millennia.

We use this sacred sacrament in ceremony to empower the individual person to connect with the divine self, all of humanity, and integrate with the One Divine Consciousness.

Cacao

Cacao is a plant native to Central and South America that has been used historically by the Aztecs and Mayans for medicinal and ritualistic purposes.  Its scientific name Theobroma cacao actually means “food for the Gods” and it was believed to have been sent from the heavens as a gift to mankind.

We hold a Cacao ceremony, where you may experience heart-opening and expansiveness.

Stories of Transformation and Growth

We’ve repeatedly seen the transformation and growth that results from Sacred Pillars’s retreats, but don’t just take our word for it. Here is what some past participants said about this life-changing experience.

“My intention going into the retreat (after 5 weeks of preparation) was a “spiritual explosion.” The experiences during the retreat supported this intention. It has opened me up to new insights, acceptance of difficult days in a healthy way, and to love myself.” – LL

“The retreat program was powerful and transformative. The preparation exercises and meetings helped me feel secure and ready to experience the medicine. I felt completely safe to explore and open to the healing I received. All parts of the retreat (sweat, ceremonies, sharing, food, beautiful setting, etc.) came together to support amazing growth and transformation. The atmosphere was one of absolute love. The integration meetings and exercises after the retreat really helped me take what I learned and experienced and use it to change my daily life. After the retreat, I was able to identify and start to shift some deeply rooted habits of mind that were not helping me.” – Sarah

Preparing for Your Psilocybin Retreat

In addition to the preparation phase to ready yourself emotionally for your retreat, you also want to make sure you are physically eligible for the experience. Evidence suggests that there are certain health considerations to make before participating in a retreat.

You are unlikely a fit for our ceremonies if:

  • You or your immediate family have a history of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorder.
  • You are taking lithium, tricyclic antidepressants, or MAOIs.
  • You have a heart or cardiovascular condition, such as high blood pressure, stents, irregular heartbeat, or a history of stroke, aneurysm, or heart attack.
  • You are not in good physical condition, capable of sitting and lying on the floor and getting up unassisted for extended periods.
  • If you are 65 years or older. If so, you must have a physician’s approval to participate. If you can’t participate because of your age, microdose coaching may be an alternative.
  • You are actively using drugs or alcohol.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have COVID-19 or have had or been exposed to it in the last 10 days.

In addition to these conditions, you should not participate in an entheogen retreat while actively taking medical cannabis or using the psilocybin mushroom sacrament. You will need to discontinue these practices before the ceremony. You must also stop using supplements that may affect serotonergic function, such as 5-HTP or St. John’s Wort.

Certain medications, including those taken for depression, may reduce the effectiveness of the sacred sacrament of psilocybin. If you take SSRIs and SNRIs, you may wish to reconsider participating, as the effectiveness of your experience may be diminished. It’s your personal decision whether you wish to participate, knowing that these drugs may impact your journey.

We have more than a decade of experience in leading these Psilocybin retreats. So, if you have questions about your ability to participate in sacred sacrament, we are here to help.
